40 Days And 40 Nights

August 31, 2010

I've been thinking about this for a while now, and I wanted to prompt others to do what I'm committed to do, so I'm emailing this to everyone on my small list, and I want each of you to consider making a commitment, and if you agree, ask others to do the same.

Regardless of your political affiliation, there can be no doubt that our Nation is in peril, both from an economic and political standpoint, and from a standpoint of the values we espouse. On November 2, we'll make decisions about the direction in which our Nation will steer for at least the next two years, and possibly longer. First, I'm amazed we made it this far (and hey, November ain't here yet!), but if God allows, we have the opportunity to change directions. Both political parties are at fault here, and that leads directly back to us. We need men of integrity and faith to guide our country, or we'll fail.

So, here's what I'm asking you to do:

First, commit yourself to a season of prayer. Second, ask your church to do the same.

For 40 days and 40 nights, individually seek God's guidance and favor for our country. At least once each morning, and once each evening, find a time to spend a minute or two in prayer for yourself and for our nation. If you can convince your church, set aside a specific time each worship service (Sunday morning, Sunday night, Wednesday night - whatever the scheduled services are) to corporately seek God's guidance for our country. Begin the season of Prayer on Wednesday evening, September 22, and for 40 days and 40 nights (that Wednesday being the first night), pray for our nation, culminating on election day, November 2. As a body of believers, we should claim the 714 Promise - "If My people, which are called by My name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked Ways; then will I hear from heaven, and forgive their sin, and heal their land" - II Chronicles 7:14 - a verse I'm sure you're all intimately familiar with.

If we stand for God, God will stand with us. That's what He promised. If you believe this, twice a day is not too much to give, don't you think?
