The Bible does not contradict itself. So, when Paul wrote the Ephesians "For by grace you are saved, not of works, lest any man should boast", he's telling us God's grace trumps any amount of works. So, how does that square with James 2:26? It's really simple, and James gives us another clue in verse 18: "I will show you my faith by my works."

Once the Holy Spirit enters your life - the moment of salvation - changes begin to occur. We will never be sinless in this life, but our lives will show a change in all areas. The amount and rate of change occurs differently in every individual, but there will be a change. These changes include what James calls "works". This process is called sanctification. It's the process of becoming more like Christ, and is a lifelong process.

James 2:26 is not saying you can lose your salvation. That's the equivalent of kicking the Holy Spirit out! That just ain't gonna happen. However, just because you walk an aisle, or say "magic words" does not automatically grant you grace. It must be a change in heart and mind - full acceptance of who Christ is, and committing your life to Him, trusting in His promises.

John 10:27-28: "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give to them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand."

This is the eternal security of the believer. BUT, and this is the key to James, you must be a believer. You works are the evidence of your faith!
